Repayment of benefits increasingly leads to problems for citizens
More and more people are running into financial difficulties because they have to repay benefits. This is shown by research conducted by NOS, based on information from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Dutch Tax Administration.
Olaf Simonse was interviewed for the article: “Under financial stress, people are less able to think ahead logically and to take good care of themselves,” says Olaf Simonse, researcher in economic psychology at Leiden University. “This leads to poor health, loss of productivity, and depression. It’s difficult to put a precise figure on it, but the economic damage to society is considerable.”
